What are sex crimes?
Sex crimes are crimes that contain any type of unwanted physical contact with ANY sexual organ. There are a lot of different types of sex crimes such as sexual assault, sexual battery, sexual abuse, aggravated sexual assault, rape, statutory rape, date rape, prostitution, pimping, indecent exposure, lewd acts, and solicitation to just name a few. Most of the sex crimes committed in California are felony sex crimes.
What kinds of people commit sex crimes?
Most of the sex crimes committed are perpetrated by men of the same race as the victim. But some are committed by women as well. There is even a nationally known case of a middle school teacher, which is also a female celebrity, which is in trial now (Spring of 2006) for committing statutory rape with a thirteen year old boy. Most sex crimes are committed not by strangers, but by someone that is somehow close enough to the victim, especially a family member, that the victim is unsuspectful of the attacker's intentions until it is too late.
Do sex offenders force themselves onto their victims?
Sometimes sex offenders do force themselves onto their victims but that usually occurs in extremely violent cases or long-term child abuse cases. The majority of sex offenders use persuasion, deceit, and peer pressure to entice their victims into "consenting" to the act, especially in child abuse cases.
Do sexual predators have only one type of victim that they prey on?
Research has shown that most sexual predators do not single out just one type of victim, although some do only chose one type of victim. Research has also shown that sexual child abusers are attracted not only to children but also attracted to adults as well. So in other words, if a sexual predator normally targets adults they will also target children as well or vice versa. These predators usually can't just change their behaviors just because they want to change them. Usually, these behaviors are deeply rooted and take long-term intervention and therapy. A good analogy is a smoker that wants to quit smoking and has attempted to quit on several times but is still smoking. Knowingly, the severity of the difference between the two behaviors is extreme. But the choices of mental processes is still basically the same.
Are sexual assault/ abuse victims only hurt when their attacker uses force?
Think about this for a moment. If someone just physically assaults you the assault not only harms you physically but also mentally. When the human body is injured by an outside human force, not only do we as humans get upset, angry, and emotionally distraught, but we also deny the fact that we allowed someone else to hurt us, thereby self-internalizing the guilt, shame, and blame upon ourselves as individuals. These are also some of the reasons that victims of sexual abuse/ assault crimes fail to come forward right away. If the perpetrator is a family member that is well known and well liked among the local community the victims could also tell themselves that no one will believe them if they try to alert someone of the sex crime that was committed.
